After taking the summer off from camera trapping, I finally put out a set in late autumn after coming across some lynx tracks a few miles from my place in Montana. I initially planned to set up at an excellent log crossing the cats had used previously, but when I went to take a test shot that evening I realized that my PIR had gotten switched on and had drained the battery. :oops It was getting dark so I just decided to pull the entire set and come back the next morning.

Instead of going with my original plan, I chose this spot instead, a small game path in the forest that funneled down to the log crossing. After a couple of weeks went by I checked the set, but no cats. I moved the set to the log crossing, and also ran a regular trail camera. While I didn't capture any animals crossing the log, I did have a video on my trail cam of two young, playful mountain lions chasing each other through the snow just on the other side of the stream. I was lucky to have pulled the set when I did though, because a cold snap moved through and my tripod legs were frozen in the creek, and my pelican case was only a few inches above the water level.

The area is full of potential, and I plan to revisit the log crossing in the future. Here's the only image I captured over the course of a month.

Great image, l do hope you get that lynx picture you want.
I am fascinated in cats, (besides the fact feral cats are decimating our rare and endangered wildlife). They continually hold my interest. We don't have big cats so I am always trying to learn as much as l can about their habits. I have a question for you, how can you tell the difference between a young lion and a Lynx and then again a bobcat? Yes l know lynx has big feet.
