Thunderstorms have continued to sweep across S. TX. But we always welcome rain in this part of the world, because we get so little. Here are some photos and ramblings from yesterday's camera check in Atascosa County, about 60 miles south of San Antonio.

A sandy camera- yet another reason to pile prickly pear pads around the housing.

Highlights from the camera- My son's crazy feet :-), storms, a mud-loving armadillo and a trusty Jav.

Gear check-

Pinholes drilled in PVC flash housing allow hot air to slowly vent out under edge of cap (so thermal expansion from the sun doesn't push off cap). Holes also eliminate suction so cap can be easily removed.

Rifle cartridge box perfect for rechargeable batteries. Charged ones pointed up, dead ones pointed down.

Packed up and moved. Hot, snakey, mosquitoes are bad. Got to start picking spots closer to the road!

Love seeing your pics from Texas. You do a good job of capturing the habitat. I agree with you about starting to set closer to the road.

Yes those are snake leggings. I usually wear them if I am working alone. The tall grass/weeds and warm wet weather is a risky combination for rattlesnakes.

Thanks for all the great tips: 1. pin-holes drilled in flash case; 2. rifle cartridge box for AA's and 3. reminder to consider all the surrounding elements when placing gear, i.e. sand on camera from rain. Cool habitat and hilarious "crazy feet" shot.

In Massachusetts, I thought dealing with ticks were bad, I cannot imagine having to worry about rattlesnakes... I'm starting to wonder which is worse?
