My son and I were out in the brush today and spotted several crested caracaras and hawks lingering around a small water tank. Turns out they were bickering over a freshly killed jackrabbit. It was almost dark so I set a camera straight on the ground and rubber banded a couple flashes to nearby bushes. I came back after sundown and had captured some interesting shots.

Nikon D7000, 18mm, 1/200, f11, ISO200

2 sb-28’s, 1/4 power, 70mm, my own PIR.

Amazing shots, and love the spontaneous set up. It seems great shots sometimes come from the least planning and least hi tech kit. Rubber bands for the win!

Hey, you were quick on the draw for that one. Wonderful shots; the plucking action was obviously fast and furious. Give us more surprises.

Ha! Yeah, it was getting dark quick so I rubber-banded the sensor to the foot of the radio flash trigger on the hot shoe, pointing it at the rabbit. Then I tried to get my camera to stay level on a very uneven dirt-cloddie surface. Finally got it steady on 2 pieces of mesquite bark and hoped for the best. When I returned an hour or so later, the rabbit was gone and I figured I had gotten something interesting. If any cattle had showed up to water at this location it would have been game over for the equipment just laying there on the ground. Fortunately they didn't.
