In spite of it's arid climate, prickly pear flats and mesquite trees, some parts of South Texas are home to thriving populations of alligators. During wet spells, they leave the safety of larger rivers and travel up creeks and over land to livestock ponds ("tanks") and sloughs.

I have not had a great amount of success camera trapping them. Their movements over land are unpredictable and they are cold-blooded which makes them tough targets for a PIR sensor to accurately report when the set is along a shoreline. It is not difficult to stake out a spot and get some nice handheld shots, but handhelds lack that juicy camera trap lighting goodness we lust after. :-)

So, I set up an active infrared beam break unit on a gator slide at the edge of a nasty Brush Country slough. Got some interesting shots.

Nikon D3200, f11, 1/200, ISO 200, 2 SB-28's, AIR beam break sensor

Terrific shot. He (or she) sure posed nicely. Curious to know how many shots it triggered?

Thanks. 3 shots per interupt. Got several rounds of around 30-40. Difficult creatures to frame.
