Hey there,

I was wondering what people use for light diffusion on their flashes?

I'm really used to nice diffused light on my herp (reptiles/frog) photography and was wondering if there was a product that can be used for diffused camera trapping?

Thanks
Jannico

you would probably find that you need as much light as possible. Also with diffusers to get a nice coverage the diffuser needs to be fairly large which might put some animals off.
I would suggest maby try using a white cover for the flash box? that might work but again it might be abit out of place looking for some animals. I know in the jungle that alot of animals avoid anything new and out of place for a fairly long time

A neighbor made me some diffusers on his 3D printer. Convex jobs for LED arrays. They worked, but they also reduced the lighting.

I am planning to use lock-n-lock spagetti boxes, and I have even ordered a 9 liter box planing for it to act as a waterproof soft box for one of the flashes.

I rarely mess with softening light since you usually wanna large source close to subject, which critters rarely tolerate. I've used Lumiquest products but they get brittle and crack in the field, I made my own softboxes from rubbermaid totes and ripstop nylon for a while, but eventually decided it wasn't worth it for 90% of sets cause they don't do well in the wind, scare off critters, and furry animals (when dry) take hard light well (I have lit grizzly and cougar with sizable soft boxes, but stopped trying that a while back). I like David Hobby's advice of lessening the lighting ratio if you want to reduce the harshness, so make your fill light closer in power to your key... good luck
