a friend of mine has been hearing what he thinks in coyotes howling near his home. his wife has a small dog (coyote snack sized) and they are concerned there is one nearby that could snatch him up. he got a commercial camera and set it up and he sent me these pictures. the stance and overall look screams coyote to me but i would like some opinions before we invest time and effort setting up to try taking it down

Looks like a coyote -- tell your buddy to keep the dog inside and not let it run loose. If you kill the coyote another one will take its place. And, tell him to remember that coyotes are only a minor threat among many to tiny dogs that run loose (bigger dogs, cars, vehicles, people who want a free dog or don't like yappy little dogs, great horned owls, etc., etc.) and he can't eliminate them all.

Woody is right on the mark. An old chicken farmer told it saves time and money to "train" the local great horned owl to lay off the chickens, than to kill it and have to keep killing all the other replacements.
