Heres my advice for SLRs:
Get flash off camera-- good for images and directs attention of curious bears away from your expensive camera and lens. Use wide angle lens stopped down to F8 for DOF and optimal sharpness. Use manual focus. Put camera in Manual mode, use Auto exposure bracketing with darkest exposure set to your set to max flash sync speed(eg 1/250). I choose 1/60 +\- 2Ev. This will give you varying levels of ambient light so you don't overexposed midday and keep twilight going as long as possible. Set ISO to 200, if you have a programmable auto ISO you have additional options, but you'll confound your flash power.
Be careful with strobe power. > 1/4 power can fry capacitor if you are using external power and get false triggers or a wild hamster party.
