Hi All,

aside from my DSLR build, i plan on building a compact camera rig in a peli 1020.

after searching the forum im struggling to find cameras to keep an eye out for.

s600 is an obvious one, which i did manage to get hold of, but has a lens issue that i dont fancy trying to fix.
What others are worth looking for? performance and ease of hack.

Ideally i want a cam for still night and day, not too fussed about video, and plan on extedning the flash wires and making it so it can sit around 24 inches above the camera to avoid red eye.

Harry

What will be the distance from camera to subject about?

The Panasonic FS6 and FS7 would work nice with the fs6 having the stronger flash of the 2 cameras and its an easy hack

Both the Nikon L11 and Fuji J10 will fit if the case is mounted vertically; the L11 has a better flash and uses SD cards and AA batteries, the J10 is faster but needs more external batteries (its internal battery leaves a lot to be desired). Several Sonys (P32,P41, S40 and S600) will fit in a 1020 mounted horizontally. Certainly there are other cameras that will fit, but those are the ones I'm most familiar with.

I think it would be close range, within 10 feet, as it will be in forested areas mostly.

Has anyone taken the flash from those camera and mounted externally, 24inches or so above? i would be interested to reduce red eye etc.

As per Woody, I have a P41 in a 1020 case. I got it from John @ Trail Cam Kits. Nice compact setup.

I never moved the flash but should be pretty easy on the Panasonic camera as when you do the hack the wires from the flash are right there that you can tap into

A couple of folks on this forum have moved the flash off the camera, just search "hardwired flash" and you'll get some names.

My personel favorite for your situation is a p41 and if you need more range add a remote slave and turn the iso down to 100 on the camera..I use a bunch of 600s but like the 41 better for 10 ft or under

Panasonic FS3 is a 8mp cam and is a wee bit smaller than the FS7 and 6. The FS5 is same size as the FS3 but is 10mp. Flash will be fine if set close. But I have never removed the flash so it could be higher above the camera.

Looks like a great setup!

I will keep an eye out for all those suggestions on eBay.
The only item I struggle with is the flash and lens glass? Where do people get theirs?
