Last November I set a camera at a mine tunnel thinking I might have found a bear den. Only 5 feet deep, it wasn't the ideal den. but it was highly secluded with a trail leading to it. I strapped a Browning Extreme to a Doug fir 5' off the ground to survey the trail and mine, and I waited 6 months before checking it.

One bear passed through and showed no interest in the mine, but 6 adult striped skunks had a hoe down in November. They milled around for about 2 minutes. Apparently they den together to conserve energy in winter. The hoe-down is a mystery: maybe they were warming up after breaking camp.

Skunks came and went into the mine all winter, and the other mine visitors were a bobcat, a gray fox, and a fisher.

Like the bear a puma just passed through and showed no interest in mining.

Skunks are not what I expected, but I'm happy with the outcome. I never knew skunks have hoe-downs.

That's a great find. I found something similar recently and have intended to hang a camera there but haven't done so yet. That inspires me to get out there and get it done.

Great catch. I have a camera at a similar spot (an old, old exploratory hole for coal -- fortunately there's no coal anywhere near it), it gets a lot of use from raccoons but apparently nothing else.

Thanks, guys. I've concluded that if you find a curious or feature in the woods, something that makes you want to explore it, chances are there are critters that will feel the same way. Check it out and set a trail camera! You might get a surprise.
