I assume that this Roosevelt cow Elk has a rare skin condition called "VITILIGO". Here are last Summers pics of her and then from two weeks ago. I'm glad to see that she has survived the winter but wow! she is really strange looking now.

It appears that she had a rough winter and food was scarce. The skin condition is also called Leucism.
Below is a link to a video explain LEUCISM & VITILIGO.

Thank you very much for that info., much appreciated. Does it appear that she has any coat of hair on her now? It looks like skin with patches of hair. Not only that, I have never seen an Elk with that goatee hanging down from its lower jaw.

No, I have never seen an Elk or White Tail deer with a goatee like the one she has. It appears that she is either going through a Winter Molt or she may have a disease called Hair Loss Syndrome. This can be caused by Ticks or Mange Mites. Appears that on her side shown in the picture about 40 or 50 percent of her hair is either gone or very short.
Here is a link to a site giving information on Hair Loss Syndrome.

The first pic #000 is the herd crossing 1 hour before she did. They still retain their Winters coat and show no signs of shedding. As usual, she is following in the rear of the herd.

The following pics of her were taken last year at one-month intervals, starting with June. The last picture of her that was taken in Sept. shows only a faint bit of a goatee. I'm really glad that she has made it thus far.

I plan on placing my whole arsenal of cameras here this year and try and get some really decent pictures of her. This is such a rare event that has presented itself to me and I don't want to squander the opportunity.
