For the last eight years I've worked with a team of people in Colorado to increase nesting sites for barn owls. Eight years ago they'd show up in early April, winging their way north from warmer climes. Now they are showing up much earlier. We had the first barn owl show up on January 9th. This pair just started mating a few days ago. The mice and vole population is minimal. I'm not sure if this nesting pair will be successful this early. All very interesting.

In some areas barn owls nest year-round. Since incubation begins as soon as the first egg is laid the eggs hatch in the order they were laid and not all together as do songbirds' eggs. The oldest and largest nestling gets fed first, if the food supply is poor many of the hatchlings will starve or be eaten by their older sibling(s).

Yes Woody, it's survival of the biggest in the barn owl world. By late October and November, our barn owls are gone. If they start this early they may double clutch. It is all dependent on the mice and vole grocery aisle.
