Many commercial trail cameras send compressed pictures, even videos over the cellular network, either as mm message or e-mail.

Is there a way to have cam trap camera to do that, and what would it take, Arduino or even Raspberry Pi with a cellular card?

A dslr is capable of saving both raw and small jpg of the shots on its internal card. I would like to hav the small jpgs sent to an e-mail address.

Start with a raspberry pi, gphoto2, a little Python skill, a USB cell modem and a little Google research. With gphoto2 you can leave the images on the camera card and generate a thumbnail to be sent over the wireless network. Since the pi and cell modem draw quite a bit of power, you can have it turn on once a day to upload images. Sending 100kb thumbnails will only take a short time and not much battery power. Hope this helps, have fun.

Thanks for the advice, i will start looking at that.

4G /LTE would be fast but i do not think it is necessary and might draw more current. 3G would probably be the way to go.

Best is probably to keep an own power source for the sending of files.
