Since most of the cameras I hack have their focus assist lamp near the flash a 1 1/4" glass isn't big enough or the right shape for both. I've been cutting my own glass from a thin (but much thicker than the 1 1/4" piece I buy for the lens glass) piece of glass. I don't know where the piece I've been using came from (it was in my hoard of things I might use some day), but it doesn't have the blue cast that a lot of window glass seems to have. I mount the glass on the outside of the Pelican case, here's a photo of a build with the glass mounted --

Woody....what advantage is there by keeping the focus assist lamp exposed and do you need to make any setting changes when doing so?

Some of my S40s have night focus issues and using the focus assist reduces (but doesn't totally eliminate) the number of out of focus images. Sometimes it also gets an animal to look at the camera -- which can be good or bad. The Nikon L11 (and maybe others) use a focus assist light that is invisible to humans and may or may not be visible to wildlife. I use the focus assist on all my cameras except my IRs (A503 and J10), and my P32s where I use pre-set focus distances from the menu.

By the way, the S40 can focus down to about 15 inches -- it's what I used to get the photos for my "Wee Ones" post -- https://forestandfield.blogspot.com/201 ... -ones.html

I've never changed any camera settings because the focus assist is on.
