The lowly Virginia opossum is one of the only species I hadn't photographed in Colorado. Their range barely extends into the very eastern margin of the state, and they aren't particularly common. Fortunately, I found a friendly photographer and land owner who had possums on his property and gave me a place to work!

Pretty simple setup on this one - one key light, one fill. Snapshot Sniper II integrated into my Pelican case with Nikon D3200 and 18-55 lens. Custom programming on the SSII to wake up the SB-28s and burn through the black frame as quickly as possible before firing three more frames. Cowboy Studios triggers. Right flash has a homemade grid on it that I made out of black straws so the light doesn't spill too much onto the grass.

The garden stakes worked really well to support my strobes. I'm going to be using them a lot more, I think.

Had to try a few different stinky things to get the possums onto the stump. Fruity stuff ended up being the best, and brought in plenty of raccoons, too.

The landowner gave me some help by covering my sensor during the day to keep the fox squirrels and blue jays from filling my memory cards. Would love to see a day/night sensor on future versions of the SSII for this purpose.

Wow awesome shots! Love the raccoons :) Curious if the black straws will melt if the flashes go off to much and got hot. Just a thought but incredible shots!

Very nice photos. Most of us in the east get far too many photos of 'possums and 'coons -- but then we'd be absolutely thrilled with a photo of a badger, magpie or other western species.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, eh?

They aren't really in contact with anything that would get hot, or if it did the SB-28 is toast anyway. I try to keep my flash power at 1/8 or lower whenever I can, and have enough delay built into my SSII programming that I haven't lost a flash yet (knock on wood!)

Nice pictures. indeed. And neat to see the set-up, too.

That's a great shot and great use of a natural prop. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice pics for sure. Although I absolutely loathe raccoons, the symmetry you captured in that photo was absolutely great!

Blessings.........Pastorjim

Those Opossums of yours over there sure are ugly! That aside i reckon that is the best night time image I have ever seen of one. Nothing shabby with the 'coon pictures either. Eventhough you lost me with the technical garb I did enjoy looking at the setup you have there.
On the Snapshot Sniper couldn't you just use the LCD & set it to "night"?
