I set some cameras out in a new area about 2 years ago and had about 4 miles to get back to the car when I heard some strange noise that sounded like bone breaking about 20 feet away. Always curious about animals and thinking it was a deer, I sneaked toward the sound. You can tell by the picture of what I saw and I almost broke out into a sweat. That was the freshest cougar kill I had ever seen and knew for sure it was very close eating on the hind quarter and watching me well within 20 yards away. I never carry a gun but not worried, just backed off and left the area. What a thrill.

Neat experience, but you probably don't want a repeat. Given the number of cougars and the number of people, attacks on humans are really rare. For some reason we tolerate people killing other humans much more than we tolerate humans being killed by wild animals.

That's a once in a lifetime experience. I would be back there tomorrow with a some sort of camera.
