I've built a couple wireless flashes in the past using Ralph's slave flash boards w/glass bottles. When they work, they work great, but they're intermittent and finicky. I'm really hoping to convert these to use flash triggers instead. How difficult is the process, and is there a tutorial out there showing a step by process? Seems I remember seeing something a while back, but can't remember where.

I found my earlier discussion on this topic, but it's from years past:

How's everyone accomplishing this today? New boards available? Obviously, Jim abandoned making his boards available some time back, and I don't have SMT build capabilities ...

Give Ralph a message or call....he had a simplified method and has all the stuff to build these. I'm using 3 of them and they work great!

Hopefully he'll stumble into this thread, and help others who might have similar questions.

I have everything I need to make this happen, with the exception of a day/night circuit board. Can these now be purchased fully assembled, and ready to put in a build?

Did you mean to reference the flash backpacker?

For my wireless set -up I use the RC Davis smt board with the flashbackpacker and transmitter with the camera..For the slave I use the slave controller and the receiver + slave and board batteries. They work really well.

You may want to contact Ralph and discuss this with him, that was all. Let me include a variety of links and pics for you to look at.
He also put out a tutorial on this subject............. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11116

Keep in mind that there are multiple ways that you could have problems with the wireless slave units. One being the quality of the transmitter and receivers. Another is the correct voltage to the slave board, flash unit and receiver. NiMh cells are 1.2 v and Alkaline are 1.5 v. Just be sure that the correct voltage is supplied.

I use one of Ralph's wireless slaves and I found that the PT sensor was not very sensitive to my camera's flash. To make it work as it should the flash had to be basically within the field of view of my camera's lens which is silly. So I attached a mirror placed at 45 degrees in front of the cam's flash and placed the wireless flash unit above it. Works each and every time and I've had the wireless flash placed 4 ft. above the camera and it worked perfectly. Here's a link to my modification............... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11279
