Hi all
Been working a lot so not much time for cameratrapping - though got A7Sii setup with Camtraptions set as well as Nikon kit.

Apart from the Atomos Ninja Star has anyone got any recommendations for a non-lcd screen external recorder via SDI or HDMI.
Don't fancy sticking a Ninja or Shogun in a setup left in woods, but could do with a decent recorder for 1080p or 4k video.

I have only used Atomos products in Sony builds but Black Magic has a smaller recorder that will take SDI or HDMI as an input that I would like to try someday. It does have a LCD screen but the overall size of the unit is much smaller than a shogun and the price is less than US$500. The 4k version is around US$800 I believe.

The a7SII will record 4k to the internal SD card. Do you need more space or the quality of the SDI or HDMI format?

Hi Jeff
Mainly was for leaving setups for many months and to be able to position the recorder so I could eject and swap the media without disturbing the unit.
Could then teach untrained folks to collect and replace cards and using dummy battery & v-mount do battery swaps without moving camera and inevitably defocusing unit.

Thinking for Africa researchers

Here is one I built a few years using a Sony a7S camera and a Ninja Flame recorder.

Everything is powered by a V-mount battery in the bottom of the housing. It was very easy and quick to swap memory modules and battery. I modified the Flame to respond to the controller and start recording when the camera was ready.

I believe this unit went to china for a wildlife movie project. The above images are from my back yard before shipping.

Thanks Jeff
Just seems expensive sticking a big unit with a screen don't care about in a camtrap so was hoping for just a card writer recorder sans lcd.
Especially as elephants like to smack cameratraps.

Looks like just grab a couple of Ebay Ninja 2s or similar and whack them in and hope for best.
Cheap option might be FX Lion Nano and a smallrig v-lock to cheeseplate rather than proper v plate or gold miunt v plate.

Btw lovely setup you made there.
