Peeping Tom

Turkey at window_15.jpg
Wife: "There's a turkey at the window, and he's pecking it!"

Me: "I'll get the camera, don't move"

Indeed, the turkey WAS hammering the window, and he was oblivious to me as I cat-stalked closer and closer, snapping pictures.

But he wasn't a Peeping Tom. He was wacko Tom.

After each resounding peck, he snapped the air as if trying to catch a fly.

In a few moments I realized that he was trying to catch this own snood hanging on the side of his beak.

[Merriam Webster definition of snood: "a fleshy protuberance at the base of the bill of a turkey".]

I knew no one would believe this, unless I got a picture. And then I got the proof.

When the snood popped out of his beak, he again studied his reflection in the window, gave a mighty peck and then snapped at it again.

After checking my images to make sure I had it, I approached him even closer. The tom finally noticed me and left in a huff.

What a great catch, to grasp your own snood. Makes me wonder if it hurt when he grabbed his snood or if he didn't pinch it hard enough to be painful. Great catch on your part as well. Spring's here -- the toms in our area are starting to gobble and display as well, but they haven't attacked a reflection in our windows (yet).
