My next set

Post by JonnyA »

My friend says this thing is called a Tanaja, it's a pothole in a slab of rock that's full of water. This one is on a cliff face with a ~50 ft. drop; it's a really cool spot and there's even some small aspens growing out of slots in the rock. I've gotten pictures of bobcat and bear in this area, but never thought to set on the tanaja cause there are other water sources not too far away and the spot is really exposed to wind--last thing I need is my camera blowing off of a cliff.

Put a trail cam on the water hole a few days ago. Went to check it while hiking in the area and to my surprise it got a midday visit from a bobcat. I had the cam aimed funny and I can't tell if the cat was drinking cause it spent the entire clip inspecting my trial cam, which was chomped on by a bear the week before in a different spot.

Trying to figure out how to set an SLR cam here. The grass and reflections off the water are going to be tough for false triggers with a PIR sensor, but there's also not a good place to line up a receiver for an active IR trigger... If I face the direction opposite how the picture is taken, I'm looking off the cliff with a nice sky background... but I like the rocks behind the pool.... think I'll make a set tomorrow. Hopefully my trial cam is getting more visitors, I'm surprised the pack rats up there don't sip from it but maybe they get their water from grass?

cheers
Jonny

How did I not notice that! I'll have to work that into the picture.

If you pull it off it will be spectacular. Good luck.

Hey Jonny. You could try hide one of the active IR pieces in the "bum crack" of that rock and set the other on a tripod just out of the camera's view.

Not off to a good start... a thunderstorm rolled in after I set the camera and the rain drops caused a bunch of false triggers with the Eltima light barrier sensor I was using. I did something I rarely do and left one of my speedlites on full power cause I wanted it a ways back from the set and was shooting at f/11 ISO 200 to keep from overexposing daylight. That speedlite overheated and died. Did get a bat at one point. Gonna switch out sensor for a PIR and replace flash, hope luck improves.

I shoulda known that butt rock was bad luck

Darn, I was hoping for some captioning opportunities.
