One of several sets I put up recently deep in the tropical forests of Xekong province, Lao PDR. w200 with remote baby slave. I put the camera here for one very simple reason: it was one of the only flat area I could find in this mountainous terrain. The other sets were put at very high altitude (above 6,500 feet)—and my fingers were too cold to bother pulling out my camera to take pics! Who would have known I’d need winter clothing in July in a tropical country. Lesson learned.

That looks like it should be a good set. I wouldn't have thought you would ever need winter clothing there, much less in July.

Looks like a super setup. The camo on your cams is awesome. Good luck and can't wait to see some results.

Should be an interesting set, hopefully that fogginess or smudge clears from the glass.

Ditto everyone above - good spot and set. I hope the cam trap eating ants remain down at lower elevations :wow . Can hardly wait to learn what exotic critter shows up in that spot. You hoping for something in particular? Are you performing census presence/absence monitoring work here?

Thanks for the comments everyone, I can't wait to see what shows up, and will share with you all as soon as I can. This was my first time camera trapping at such high elevations in the tropics -- am excited to see what is living at those altitudes. As far as I know, I'm the only farang (foreigner) to have gone into that area.

Kalon, we're doing landscape-scale occupancy across several protected areas using commercial cams, but the homebrew work is 'just for fun,' my personal challenge to see if I can catch rare species on homemade units. I'm hoping for striped rabbit (Nesolagus timminsi) or large-antlered muntjac (Muntiacus vuquangensis). I don't dare dream that I'd be lucky enough for Saola . . .
