I'm working right now in a mountainous region in southeastern Laos (along the border with Vietnam). Much of the work has been at high elevations. This setup was at 2,000 meters (approx. 6,500 feet). The forest at this altitude is very unique: called montane forest, or cloud forest, the trees tend to be small and stunted and everything is covered in a blanket of moss. Very different from the typical tropical jungle I am used to. I imagine that the wildlife would also be different in this habitat type, so was keen to set a camera there and see what showed up.
This camera was an s600 with D cells for long-term setup. I set the camera over a small stream that looked like it could be a natural wildlife funnel. The fourth photo shows the camera view. I positioned the camera very low in the hopes of catching any small carnivores.
Oh . . . and the forest here is very wet. So lots of jungle leeches. Two days ago I pulled 25 off one foot alone. I guess I am a blood donor now.
