I was thinking about your setup. Why the fish tank? I feel it looks unnatural out in the bush I feel the owl would be wary if not frightened by it? I would have used a wire cage, rusty old wire would be better than bright shiny new wire.

You are probably right. I've been so anxious to capture this owl for so many years, I am really reaching. I am going to try the suggestion of the owl decoy as soon as I find the one I want. Thanks for your feedback.buckhuntertrailcam wrote:I was thinking about your setup. Why the fish tank? I feel it looks unnatural out in the bush I feel the owl would be wary if not frightened by it? It does look a little bit busy for an owl. It took me 4 years to a good eagle picture and I don't use any bait, so hang in there and it will come. Still trying for a Night Hawk, Goshhawk and spotted owl.

I've got these guys but to me the great horned is the grand prize! And I agree, in hindsight it is busy.cliffw wrote:It does look a little bit busy for an owl. Great story and GHO images.cameratrapcodger wrote:Good luck. We are ready for the action. An alternative attractant is a horned owl model and a recording of a hooter calling. Here is a story and pictures from a few years back when we were cam-trapping the Chimineas Ranch, operated by California Fish and Wildlife.

Ok everyone meet Ollie the owl. The latest weapon in my arsenal to try to capture the great horned owl i have been after. I decided you all were right, the whole aquarium thing is just too much. We will try a simpler approach. He is solar powered and he turns his head and screeches and his eyes light up when he senses motion. I'll get him out in a few days.

P.S. I hope it works for you

Well my wife heard me talking about it and ordered off Amazon. I believe it was $30. Here is a link.

Thanks for that, I consider that very reasonable considering what it does. I was expecting something like $100+ that's how much it would be here I bet.

Re: All in on a raptor set
Now that we're having so much fun with this topic, if you really dig owls, Farley Mowat wrote an excellent and highly amusing little book called "Owls in the Family". I read the old "Reader's Digest" short version as a kid, and after that wanted a great horned owl in the worst way. I ended up with a screech owl and later a barn owl with feet like vice-grips. A couple years ago I was short on reading material, and remembered that book. Hunted it down, bought a cheap copy from ABEBooks, and read it with great pleasure. It's great bedtime reading for camera trappers.
