All in on a raptor set

Post by pastorjim08 »

I know many of you have seen my raptor set over the years and I have had some success with it. However, the one target that I have been after has so far eluded me. It is a giant great horned owl that I have seen on numerous occasions. He just will not land on my perch. So I decided to go all in to rev things up a bit. I went to the local pet store and purchased live mice, put them in an aquarium and put out solar lighting that I'm hoping will attract the big guys attention. The set also has two of the trap bait callers running. And finally I set one of my cell cameras to watch the area. That way if the big owl does show up but doesn't land on one of my perches, I will at least know he was there. Wish me luck guys.

Very interesting idea. If all the "stuff" doesn't scare it off you should get some good photos -- good luck with it.

Well I'm hoping that the natural movement of the mice will help him overcome all the "stuff."

Good luck. We are ready for the action. An alternative attractant is a horned owl model and a recording of a hooter calling. Here is a story and pictures from a few years back when we were cam-trapping the Chimineas Ranch, operated by California Fish and Wildlife.

Thanks so much for sharing that. I will go to my local farm store today to see if I can pick up one of those owl decoys. People use those all the time around here in their gardens but I never even thought about using one of those for my purpose. Thanks again!

Forgot to mention in my previous comment that I've had very satisfying results attracting barred owls with a homebrewed caller alone. Here's how I built the caller -- https://camtrapper.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11144

I built two of these, the first has the light sensor in a small glass bottle; the second build is in a clear Pelican 1010 with the sensor inside behind a small area that wasn't painted. It works just as well as the first and is more secure without the glass bottle.

I don't know if either of the components is still available since they weren't made in the U.S.
