Stinkpot set

Thought I'd share this.

At least where I camera trap, whenever I try to use meat bait in the summer, it is pretty much instantly gone. Blowflies will take care of it in short order (if the buzzards don't sniff it out).

I got the idea of making a "stinkpot". Back in my trapping days, we used to fill a jar with cut pieces of meat and water, and then set it in the sun for a month or three. Cover loosened! Lovely stuff. I borrowed that idea for cam trapping by taking some cheap meat (chicken gizzards) and putting them in a little paint can with some water and drilling very small holes in the lid so the flies can't get to it, but it can release it's lovely aroma. I should have a metal can, but the little plastic one is what I had around. There are very few bears in this area.

I then tied the can high enough in a tree so the odor will disperse and it doesn't show up in the pics. It's really worked pretty well. I posted a pic of a wolf a bit ago that was sniffing the ground under the tree, where the juice lands. I put a skull there thinking that if a predator shows up smelling something rotten, it's going to check out the skull.

I've had this out since the start of warm weather, and it is still there and it still stinks.

What you DO NOT want to do is reach up and tip it toward you to check on it! Don't ask me how I know this, ha ha!

Hey, we sure can think of a lot of ways to have fun!

A more expensive alternative is a can of mackerel or sardines (tuna seems a waste to me) -- punch holes in one end and one hole on the opposite end so you thread a wire through it. Hang it up and see how long it takes to smell like bait. It lasts for months and the bouquet gets better and better.

Great idea, could even use the scraps from cutting up and getting the fat off any meat or bird -- or even use a road-killed squirrel or chipmunk.

Bkontio,

great idea...I'll give that a try on my carnivore trail...Ants are a big problem here and I'll try some slick string and hang it...!! Thanks for sharing....!!

Great idea.

I once nailed a coffee can to the back side of a deadfall about 5 feet up. I filled the coffee can with a dead northern that had washed up on shore. I mounted my camera about 6 feet up in the tree aimed at the off-side of the dead fall so you couldn't see the can. I got fisher, weasels, and a sow with three cubs balancing on that deadfall. One of my best sets!

Found some of the shots from that set.

Sean,

nice shots...I have used fish-heads and chicken strung-up with fishing line....that worked bringing jackal and leopard...but the stink-can looks like a real winner...!
