Pics from the lick

Post by Bob »

I had more than 2,000 pics of elk this week, mostly bulls. Had pics of two cows and one new calf. I have seen new whitetail and muley fawns near the set, but no pictures yet. I had very few pics of deer this week because the elk are staying around close. Only one buck pic this week. The elk love the garbanzos. They cleaned them up in the first 24 hours and kept coming back looking for more.
Because of the rain and the elk smudging uop my lens, some pics are not clear. Today I moved the camera up on a pole seven feet off of the ground. The elk pics will be much better and hopefully my lens will stay clean. An hour after I left the set today, my neighbor called and told me the bulls were already there after the garbanzos. I have already seen noticeable antler growth.

Nice pics Bob. Its a shame the lens was smudged on the little one.

Nice batch of pictures Bob. Nice-sized bulls too, hopefully you'll be able to grab some monster sheds again this year.

Thanks for the comments. I should get some nice pictures this summer and fall. Something happened to one of these bulls a week or so back. He injured his right rear leg. I can see wounds above and below the knee, and the knee is swollen. He does not put any weight on this leg. You can see this in some of the pictures above. This is the bull my neighbor named "Wilbur", and he is one of our favorites. I am not sure if he had an encounter with a predator or just got hung up in a barbed wire fence. One thing is for sure right now is that he is very vulnerable to predators because he is hobbling around on three legs. We are hoping he recovers soon.

These pictures show how I changed up this set. The top camera is a W230, and it is canted downward slightly. The bottom camera is a W290 set for video. That is my neighbor's place across the way. The 230 is about seven feet off of the ground, and the 290 about four feet. The elk only mess with my cameras at night. I think they are attracted to the flash and illuminator. They can't reach the 230, and the 290 will not flash, so I hope my camera lens will stay clear.

We live down at the bottom in the timber along the creek about a mile away

Since the top camera is canted downward a tad, both cameras have the same view. When the bulls have their heads up, their antlers will not be cut off now

I took this picture from my neighbor's yard. The arrow points to the lick
