I have been running this camera for over a year now, and I really like it. I like the 290 even better, but the 230 takes some very nice pictures. I have recently made a neat discovery. I set a pole so I could get the camera up off of the ground seven feet. I had hoped this would keep the elk from smudging up my lens. It has helped, but they can still do it. But it is amazing how much better the pictures are when the camera is up in the air. The camera can see things beyond the mineral lick. The camera is canted down slightly, and this has really improved the night flash pictures. It is putting all of the flash on the ground. The camera is about 15 feet from the mineral block, so I had to put the camera back on full auto to get enough flash range. With the flash hitting the ground, the pictures are not as grainy as they were before. And I really prefer this camera selecting the ISO during the day. The full resolution picture is 4000 pixels wide. When you size the picture down to 1024 pixels like I have done in this first picture, you lose resolution. But when you zoom in or crop the full resolution picture, the resolution is retained. When I was watching the slideshow of these pictures, a white speck in the background above the deer caught my eye. The second picture is the deer cropped out, and the third picture is the white speck cropped out.
The evening this picture was taken, we were watching through my spotting scope. There is a doe at the mineral lick eating garbanzos. She kept chaing this little buck away. here he is back in the bushes watching her. As soon as she left, he came in for the garbanzos. On this set, I have learned that the deer prefer garbanzos over corn. And better yet, I am getting very few pictures of mice, rabbits, doves and quail. There were turkeys there one day, and they did not touch the garbanzos
These pictures with ISO 800 are plenty good enough for me. they are not that grainy, and the camera has plenty of flash as far as I am concerned. I would not want these pictures any brighter.
This week-end, I hope to replace the 230 with an H55. I will run it on still images for a few days, and then I will switch it to videos. My neighbor told me today that there have been some very nice bulls at the lick every morning this week. I have alot of pictures and videos that I can make comparisons to for the H55
