Mostly elk pics (longterm W120 sets)

Post by javman »

Last month I checked one of my cams that had been out for four months, a Sony W120 with 3 C externals. I was surprised that the batteries still had a little bit of juice left. It had taken 405 pics (no bait), but most of them were in a one week period during the rut, and just a couple pics per week after that. Snow pushed them down, and I think they stayed down. About 40 of the pics were from the branch in front of the camera blowing back and forth after being loaded down with snow :Hammer

I got about six pics of elk, where a bat happened to be in the picture as well. Kinda weird.

Then last week I checked a cam that had been out for three months in a location that had been a hot spot for elk all summer/fall. I was kind of disappointed with only 75 pics, no elk, a few deer, about 30 coyote shots, and a lot of foggy/blurry/dark shots. This cam is kind of high in elevation compared to where the animals are right now, so no big surprise. The downer was that the batteries had died. Either the humidity is greatly increasing the discharge rate, or they were bad batteries, sitting on the store shelf too long. I'm going to switch from 3 C alkalines to 6 AA eneloops and see if that makes a difference on these long term sets where I don't use bait. I'll see how long these eneloops last in a constantly humid environment.

Those are some awesome pics! My favorite is the one of the two coyotes - the background in that one looks like something out of a painting.

I also really like the date/time/moonphase stamp you have at the bottom. Would love to have something like that on my pictures.

Love the coyote pics! And I agree...you should sell that program as a download!

Excellent! :awesome

Great catch on the bat. I've caught bats several times on a cam over a mineral lick. The wait for the deer, then feed on the mosquitoes that are feeding on the deer. Probably what happened here.

Great pics, and I really like the program that puts the moon phase in. Where did that come from?

I wrote a program last year that adds that info at the bottom of my pics. It's a Mac program though, and I never really finished it.

Those are terrific pictures! I'm also interested in your photo stamping program. Have you finished it yet? It's excellent. I would be very interested in purchasing a copy for my Mac.
