Aussie Emus.....how many can YOU see ?

Post by 35whelen »

Emus are a large flightless bird that stand around 6 feet tall. They are quite common in AU and are found from the dryest deserts to our heavily timbered mountain country.

There's a fair mess of them in this S600 TC shot. How many can you see ? Look carefully now as some are not whole birds...the answer lies somewhere between 1 and 20. :laughing I'll give you a few days and then post the same image with a number overlay showing all the birds....have fun & cheers from Down Under.

I only see 14. Can you eat those like you can an ostrich? They look closely related.

I'll guess 17. I have eaten emu but I'm sure it was farm raised and tastes nothing like the wild ones. It was good and red meat if I remember correctly.

Tony....B-I-G drumsticks eh ? Emu meat is available in the supermarkets here and there is a small export market for the meat & other products too. But this is all from farm-grown birds as the are totally protected in the wild. Never tried it myself but apparently is OK...a lean red meat that you probably wouldn't pick as being from a big bird like that. Like most of the exotic meats (vension, emu, 'roo, croc) it's pretty expensive and dearer than a good steak. Their eggs are collected a bit it the wild (illegal too of course) and they make great big omelets and cakes.....or so I'm told....LOL !! Cheers

Fellas.....I reckon that there are 16 birds in that image....but a few guys think 17 with that foot seen below bird 8 but I think that belongs to bird 6...maybe ? So 16...or possibly17....but either way that's a whole mess of feather dusters ! :laughing

We've got a popular country song down here called "Old Man Emu"....one of the lines is : "He can't fly...but I'm tellin' you....he can run the pants off a kangaroo !". An interesting bird which by the sounds of it also may be here and there in the States as well. Cheers from Down Under
