Maybe you are not setting your cams over mineral licks. Most of my cams were at established licks that have been there for years. The elk lick the dirt and mud then they come mess up my cameras, but they only do this at night. On one set a few weeks back, my lens was so muddy that I could not even tell what the camera was taking pictures of for six days. I had a can of mackeral six feet from the camera, and it had been moved ten yards, and I have no idea what did that. I am through with my mineral lick sets for now because antlerless elk and deer are not very interesting trail cam subjects. I will start again in late June at the licks and wallows, but then my cameras will protected from the bears and elk. I have bear boxes with 50 3" drywall screw protecting my cameras from the bears and elk. They don't mess with the cams when my bear boxes are installed.
The pictures above were at a brand new lick that I had just started. It is not muddy around the mineral block yet, but it will be.
